DIABETES ADVOCACY IN THE ADA EAST DISTRICT

We organized an engaging and comprehensive educational session at Ada Foah in the Ada East District which aimed at enhancing community awareness about diabetes. This activity successfully trained and equipped 65 participants with essential knowledge about the diabetes condition, practical self-management skills, and promoting the adoption of healthier behaviours to improve their quality of life.  The activity was designed to address multiple aspects of diabetes management. Topics included:

Nutrition and Meal Planning: Participants learned the significance of balanced diets tailored to diabetic needs, including portion control, glycemic index awareness, and the incorporation of local and culturally appropriate foods. Public health nurses who served as resource personnels provided practical tips for meal preparation and highlighted the importance of hydration and mindful eating.

Physical Activity: The activity stressed the role of regular exercise in regulating blood sugar levels, improving cardiovascular health, and enhancing overall well-being. Activities such as walking, light aerobics, and simple home-based exercises were recommended, with adjustments to accommodate participants with physical limitations.

Medication Management: Our patients and their caregivers were trained on the safe use of diabetes medications, including insulin administration techniques, understanding medication schedules, and avoiding common pitfalls such as skipping doses or incorrect usage.

Glucose Monitoring: Hands-on demonstrations were provided to teach participants how to use glucometers effectively, interpret their results, and adjust their daily habits accordingly. We emphasized the importance of maintaining a logbook to track trends and share with healthcare providers during routine check-ups.

Complications Prevention: The discussion included recognizing early signs of complications such as neuropathy and cardiovascular issues, along with actionable steps to minimize risks.

In addition to these core topics, we addressed the social and emotional aspects of living with diabetes. This included managing stress, combating stigma, and fostering a supportive network within families and the broader community. For caregivers, we provided tailored guidance to help them offer effective and empathetic support without compromising their well-being. Moreover, we actively engaged caregivers, emphasizing their crucial role in supporting patients with diabetes. By providing tailored guidance and practical strategies, we aimed to empower both patients and their caregivers to collaboratively promote a supportive environment that creates an overall well-being.

To make the sessions more relatable, we invited local healthcare professionals and individuals living successfully with diabetes to share their experiences and insights. Their presence served as a source of inspiration and motivation for the participants.

The activity also aimed to spark ongoing dialogue about diabetes in the community. We encouraged participants to form support groups where they could share their progress, exchange tips, and hold each other accountable for achieving their health goals.
