Community Sensitization Durbar on Ending Child Marriage (Wungu/Wulugu, West Mamprusi)

Renel Ghana Foundation, under the Let Girls Be Girls Project and with funding support from Mundo Cooperante through The Right to Be a Girl Programme, organised a community sensitisation durbar in Wungu/Wulugu. The durbar convened chiefs, religious leaders, Assembly Members, head teachers, parents and school children to discuss the importance of girls’ education and collective responsibility in ending child marriage.

Purpose

  • Promote girls’ education as the primary prevention strategy against child marriage.
  • Mobilise community leadership to publicly endorse protective norms and school retention.
  • Clarify protections and pathways for at‑risk girls, including reporting channels and school re‑entry options.
  • Build local ownership so communities lead monitoring and support for vulnerable girls.

Activities delivered

  • Community durbar with plenary presentations and facilitated group discussions.
  • Information sessions on legal protections, school re‑entry policies and the harms of child marriage.
  • Public pledges from chiefs, religious leaders and Assembly Members to oppose child marriage.
  • Interactive role plays and testimonies to illustrate the benefits of education and the risks of early marriage.
  • Distribution of materials including referral contacts, school re‑entry guidance and child‑protection leaflets.
